Vapor barriers aka vapor retarders are for moisture control. Choosing the right material is crucial so don’t skimp on this part of the process. A small investment up front can save huge sums of money down the road. The key to success is proper installation so don’t cut corners; no pun intended. Installed correctly, vapor barrier’s will prevent costly problems that arise from poor moisture and humidity control.
The thickness of vapor barrier material is measured in mils. One mil is equal to 1/1000 of an inch so, a 20 mil sheet is 20 one-thousandths of an inch thick. Choosing thicker mil vapor retarders will ensure the least amount of liquid or vapor penetration.
Using plastic sheets beneath a concrete slab prevents gasses and liquids from seeping through the concrete which in turn helps control interior moisture.
